The hurricane season is a scary time of the year, especially when it comes to the safety of your home. As we have seen over the last few years, hurricanes can do a lot of damage. Because of this, it’s important to keep hurricane preparedness in mind by doing what you can to protect your home. And the New Year is the perfect time to start making of these improvements.
The following are a few improvements you can make to prepare your home for next year’s hurricane season:
- Install storm shutters – Windows are the most vulnerable part of your home’s exterior. A hurricane can cause debris to break your windows and send glass and water flying into your home. Storm shutters will protect both your windows and everyone inside.
- Install roof latches – Hurricanes generate extremely strong winds that can rip the roof right off of your home. Roof latches will help to better secure the roof to your home.
- Clean your gutters – This often overlooked task will prevent gutters from becoming clogged, which is a serious problem during heavy rains since it can end up causing serious water damage to your home. Take the time to clean out the gutters throughout the year.
- Landscaping work – Make sure you don’t have any tree branches hanging too close to your home as these can cause serious damage if they are dislodged during a storm. Cut down branches such as these and trim your shrubs.
