How Will Changes to Jersey Shore’s Boardwalk Affect Business?

coastal New Jersey business insuranceWinter 2013- The damage caused by Hurricane Sandy is extensive, especially here on the Jersey Shore, where high winds and flooding destroyed many of the region's historic boardwalks. But according to the Huffington Post, the storm is just beginning.

Towns throughout coastal New Jersey are facing off on the question of how to rebuild their boardwalks, and the clock is ticking. Most of these communities are reliant on summer tourist business, which is in turn reliant on the boardwalks that are home to so many entertainment and dining venues. But one question remains: Should the boardwalks be rebuilt with wood or more durable materials?

Many residents want to stick with the classic choice of wood, but alternatives like concrete and polymers may be more durable in the face of extreme weather. Detractors of the new techniques say there's nothing like the look and feel of a real wooden boardwalk, but opponents point out that the hardwoods typically used are unsustainable and less durable. What do you think?

Here in Belmar, our town has a boardwalk rebuilding project in the works, which will tear away the remnants of the old one while building a new one 1.3 miles in length. Once the project is completed, it will be a big help in repairing the local economy.

One thing Hurricane Sandy has illustrated is the importance of comprehensive business coverage. As a New Jersey small business owner, you need coverage not only for  your home, building, and vehicles, but also for business interruption. With loss of power, damage to infrastructure, and other results of a natural disaster, would you be able to afford the temporary closure of your business?
