When it comes to getting health insurance for the family, many people often forget about certain family members – their pets! Getting health insurance for your pet may seem unnecessary, but you could end up saving a substantial amount of money if you have pet health insurance and your pet needs certain treatments such as vaccinations.
Pet health insurance has only been around since the 1980s in the United States, and less than 3 percent of the pet owners have pet health insurance. One of the reasons for this is that few pet owners are aware that pet health insurance is an option. There are four major insurers that you can choose from when choosing pet health insurance:
- Hartville Group – Their policies usually coverage annual vaccinations for cats and dogs but tends to exclude alternative therapy. Unlike other policies, they also offer annual deductibles instead of per incident deductibles.
- Pethealth – This Canadian company provides policies in the U.S. under several names including UnionPlus, ShelterCare and PETCO.
- Veterinary Pet Insurance – This is the oldest and largest pet insurer and covers 70 percent of the pet health insurance market. In addition to cats and dogs, they offer insurance for a large number of other pets, including rabbits, fish, snakes and more.
- PetProtect – They offer two different policies that provide coverage for illnesses, diseases and accidents. Higher priced policies even cover the costs of finding a missing pet.
